An existentialist themed book which I understood more thoroughly after reading Introduction to Existentialism (Olson).

The whole plot revolves around Wilhem and the roller-coaster of emotions he experiences during a particular day, which I believed the most pivotal in his life. “The angst of being” is truly expressed in these pages. Definitively a book that must be read with some knowledge of the existentialist philosophy.

We do not attempt to understand what we are doing; our behavior is determined by habit, custom, or a vague sense of what is required of us by das Man (the One). We do not talk seriously about matters of any importance; it is bad taste to discuss religion, politics, or philosophy. Instead we talk shop or gossip about friends. Perhaps, if we have intellectual pretensions, we try to prove that we are au courant: that we have read all the latest bookds and attended all the current art exhibits. But we do not seriously discuss the content of the books we read, and in all likelihood when we go to the museum we take care to bring someone along to distract our attention from the exhibits.

Do you reach a point in which you have nothing more to say?

Because everything has gone round and round in your head. Thinking just becomes tiresome; thoughts have been put in so many different sentences and phrases, just because an answer (THE?), any answer is sought after.

Looking across my room and I simply have no idea what to make of all this NONSENSE, really. When a conclusion can’t decisively be reached, it worries me. I take one stand, then the next. I feel this and that, just so at the end I realize that I have nothing more to say because I simply just don’t know what to make out of all this. AND that. Oh, and THAT also.

Things that I thought worthwhile:

-Don’t you see that if you have no relations with people it’s easier to be honest with them?

-No reality could equal the imagination she had formed.

-When we think we’re in love we make it up. We imagine what doesn’t exist. That’s why it’s impossible that we should ever marry. Always to be finding the other an illusion, and going off and forgetting abouth them, never to be certain that you cared, or that he wasn’t caring for some one not you at all, the horror of changing from one state to the other, being happy one moment and miserable the next – that’s the reason we can’t possibly marry.

– His calm was only superficial, as he knew too well; it did not exist much below the surface of tie, waistcoat and white slip.

-… the bowing and curtsying, advancing and retreating, which are characteristics of one of the many million partnerships of men and women.

– It’s being and not doing that matters.

– She was, indeed, rather annoyed with herself for having allowed such an ill-considered breach of her reserve, weakening her powers of resistance, she felt, should this impulse return again. For, as she walked along th estreet tho her office, the force of all her customary objections to being in love with anyone overcame her. She did not want to marry at all. It seemed to her that there was something amauterish in bringing love into touch with a perfectly straight forward friendship… had based itself uppon common interests in impersonal topics.

No reality could equal the imagination she had formed.

Night & Day, Virginia Woolf

That is why I loathe fantasies, they are my sworn enemies. I don’t fantasize at all with you or anyone because you will never live up to my idea.

(This is another form of protection)

n the darkness
There’s so much I wanna do
And tonight I wanna lay it at your feet
‘Cause girl, I was made for you
And girl, you were made for me

I was made for lovin’ you baby
You were made for lovin’ me
And I can’t get enough of you baby
Can you get enough of me

Tonight I wanna see it in your eyes
Feel the magic
There’s something that drives me wild
And tonight we’re gonna make it all come true
‘Cause girl, you were made for me
And girl I was made for you

I was made for lovin’ you baby
You were made for lovin’ me
And I can’t get enough of you baby
Can you get enough of me

I was made for lovin’ you baby
You were made for lovin’ me
And I can give it all to you baby
Can you give it all to me

Oh, can’t get enough, oh, oh
I can’t get enough, oh, oh
I can’t get enough
Yeah, ha

Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do

I was made for lovin’ you baby
You were made for lovin’ me
And I can’t get enough of you baby
Can you get enough of me

Oh, I was made, you were made
I can’t get enough
No, I can’t get enough

I was made for lovin’ you baby
You were made for lovin’ me
And I can’t get enough of you baby
Can you get enough of me

I was made for lovin’ you baby
You were made for lovin’ me
And I can give it all to you baby

At the beach…

6 pm and I sit by myself at the beach, my feet dug into the sand.

The waves crash and crash, the sound. The sea roaring in my ears and suddenly… it falls into silence.

The sun, that big ball of fire. Orange, pink, yellow. The light turns more soft and melancholy bathes me. The wind surrounds me with warmth and I breath the salty air.

When something in you life is absent, not missing, you think of it as unimportant to protect yourself from disillussionment.

At least I do
